Toshiba will be leaving the U.S. market for televisions, but you’ll still be able to buy a Toshiba TV later this year. Confused? Like other brands in the TV market, the company will license its name to Compal Electronics. TVs made by Compal will hit shelves starting in March.

While you may not have heard of Compal, it’s possible that you’re reading this post on a laptop computer or desktop monitor manufactured by them. They manufacture computers for more familiar names like Dell, Compaq, HP, and… Toshiba.

Toshiba blamed the “harsh price competition” in the television market for their struggle to turn a profit from selling TVs in North America. It will also seek similar licensing agreements with another manufacturer for its television products in other countries. Instead of bothering with the television business, the company will simply rent out its name to Compal. This could work out badly if Compal sells subpar televisions.

I think the main reason that there are not many people buying Toshiba TVs is because a lot of people now  buy TVs made by Vizio, Proscan, RCA, Samsung, LG, Hisense, Seike, and many other tv brands which cost less money, and offer better features sometimes.

More people are watching video with a home projector, on a desktop, laptop, or tablet PC monitor, and their smartphones which cause people to watch less video on a TV, or don't need a TV in their room because they already have a video device like a PC in their room.

TVs also lasts for a long time under normal usage of watching them for 2-4 hours or more a day, so people don't really go out to buy new TVs very often.

There aren't many cool features on TVs these days as well since a streaming stick like Roku, Fire TV, and Chromecast, modern game console and internet connected DVD or Blu-Ray player can now stream video like YouTube from the internet. There is also not enough 4K content to make a 4K TV worth the higher cost.

Its know that Samsung, LG and Sony make the best tvs while Vizio brings up the rear.

I think Toshiba used to make pretty good TVs as well. I read  on a News site that Sony's TV department is not doing well either: Sony TV division plunges to $2.2bn loss as customers lose interest in pricey flatscreens

Compal who is now licensing Toshiba's brand name is now making Toshiba TVs, and pay royalty and licensing fees to use the Toshiba brand name. Toshiba probably figure out that they can make more money licensing their brands name to Compal, and collect royalty payments and licensing fees for every Compal TV which uses the Toshiba brand name, or Compal gave Toshiba a lot of cash to license the Toshiba name to use it to brand their Compal TVs as Toshiba TVs.

Toshiba probably also figure out that a lot of people buy TVs from brands like RCA, Insignia, Proscan, Philips, Sylvania, Vizio, TCL and Hisense which sell good TVs for $100-400, and fewer people are spending their money to buy a TV from a more expensive brands like Toshiba, and Sony.

Toshiba has pretty good user reviews on Amazon, Bestbuy, and Newegg, so maybe you got unlucky and got a bad Toshiba tv set.  I think Toshiba's old tube TVs were pretty good as well.
