Toshiba has recalled 41,000 laptops sold between August 2009 and August 2010 because the units in question represent a burn hazard to users.

Toshiba yesterday announced a voluntary product recall affecting just over 40,000 of its T-Series of Satellite laptops. The company says potentially faulty DC-In harnesses were used in the manufacture of certain Satellite T135, T135D and Satellite Pro T130 laptops. In some cases, the defective harness may overheat to the point of melting the computers base, near where the AC adapter plugs into the unit. Toshiba says there have been no reports of serious injury because of the defect but warns that the temperature is sufficient to pose a burn hazard to the user.

The Consumer Product Safety Commission says Toshiba has received 129 reports of the notebook computers overheating and deforming the plastic casing around the AC adapter plug, including two reports of minor burn injuries that did not require medical attention and two reports of minor property damage.

Toshiba is releasing a BIOS revision that customers can use to tell if their laptop is affected. If the BIOS determines your laptop is overheating, external power will be disabled immediately to eliminate risk and you'll need to call Toshiba to set up a warranty repair.

Glad, I mainly use a desktop.

Jeez.. don't they test for these things beforehand? Or do they just release it to the public at breakneck speed?

If they tested these things extensively beforehand, they would have a lot less embarrassment later on..

test things? Naw, that's too much $$.

But I am happy I stuck to PCs but this could easily happen to a PC as well.

Indeed, if the PC maker picked crappy fans which do not blow enough air to cool the parts, or used super small PC cass which don't allow much air flow inside the case.

But, it is less likely for a PC since a PC generally has about 3-4+ fans to cool the internal parts and a lot of air holes unlike a laptop which usually only have 1+ fans to cool the entire laptop, and most cheaper laptop cases are small, and made of plastic which do not get rid of heat as well as the steel metal cases used for PC.
