There have been numerous reports over the last few days regarding Move and Kinect sales - Sony recently announced 4.1 million Move controllers shipped worldwide, while Microsoft announced an estimated 2.5 million Kinect cameras sold through to consumers, both as of the 27th November 2010.

On paper then, it looks like Move is clearly ahead in the race but how do the sell-through sales and unique systems actually compare?

Playstation Move

Move has now been out for 11 weeks in total and VGChartz estimates show that the total number of Move controllers sold-through is now just over 2.5 million units worldwide, with nearly 250,000 sold last week alone with holiday sales starting to pick up. Compared to the 4.1 million units shipped, this would suggest around 1.6 million units in the retail channel but not yet sold though, an estimate that Wedbush Morgan analyst Michael Pachter agrees with.

The second issue with Move is that many customers will be buying more than one controller - something that VGChartz has attempted to factor in to previous estimates to give a comparable figure in terms of userbase. Consumer polling carried out over a sample of 100 PlayStation Move owners shows that the average number of controllers per Move setup is 1.55. Using this, we can estimate that the number of unique Move-compatible PS3s out there is now just over 1.6 million worldwide.

Kinect

Kinect has now been out for 4 weeks in total and VGChartz estimates that the total number of Kinect cameras sold-through is also just over 2.5 million units worldwide, with 875,000 sold last week. Since each Kinect camera represents a unique customer to sell games to, there is no adjustment necessary as with Move for owners with multiple controllers.

Therefore, with 2.5 million unique Kinect customers and 1.6 million unique Move customers in homes worldwide, Kinect clearly has the edge at this point. Also with 4 weeks of sales compared to 11 weeks and with over three times as many sold last week, Kinect should be significantly ahead by the end of the year. In fact, after four weeks of release, the number of unique Move customers stood at 600,000 worldwide and Wii hardware sales at the same point in time stood at 1.65 million so Kinect has actually sold faster than both combined in these first few weeks.

Move and Kinect sales

Move is getting it's ass kicked already? Sony may want to consider making a bundle with all of the peripherals for the price of $100. It would make it easier to sell and buy. Plus that way Kinect would get it's ass kicked.

it's not surprising, I bet out of the big three Microsoft has spent more to advertise and give away kinect then what sony and nintendo did with their systems combined.

Right now though, kinect is being bought with hype so the question is will that last?

It will not last because people will realize it's a piece of shit, so they will be smart and get Move. Or a Wii; even though every one has a Wii. *cough* Except DS. *cough* :whistling:

I don't have a Wii, either.

MS had Opera, and Ellen advertise the Kinect. Both Opera, and Ellen are popular with middle aged women with more money to spend then most people. It is hard to compete with Opera and Ellen since they have a huge following with women across the world.

The Xbox 360 is also being given away with a lot of Windows Phone 7 cell phone plans here in Canada.

I think the main advantage of the Kinect is the price since you can get an Xbox 360 4GB for 199 or 4GB 360 bundled with the Kinect for $300.

Sony needs to make it's move cheaper like 30 dollars.

Agreed. Move should have all the necessities for the $100. Game, 2 wands, 1 navigation, and the Playstation Eye. And Microsoft advertises TOO much.

no such thing. the more you advertise the better.
They over advertise. Why is that true? Because every other commercial I see is Kinect. Not only that, but they don't make much more money just because of advertisements, it's usually word of mouth since a lot of people have a 360.

Too much advertising is one of the reasons I watch more videos on my computer although Youtube is starting to have too many ads, so I usually unsubscribe to people who put too many ads on their videos or their video is a commercial/infomercial telling people to "buy stuff" like an iPad.

I hate commercials... but they are necessary for sales.

more like keeping the tv shows on the tv alive. but anyways, sony needs to step up their advertising for the move. though I'm wondering if move will be given away a lot in all the holiday talk show's give aways.

I'm curious to know when Sony will become smart. Heh heh heh. They should REALLY make the Move bundle with a second wand.

Indeed, Commercials are needed to keep shows a live and to sell stuff, but I see a lot of commercials for life insurance, bankruptcy help when I'm watching a show about video games. I guest life insurance and bankruptcy help pays better then movie and game commercials.

Commercials don't pay themselves off all the time. A commercial to air is about $1,000,000.

And PS3 is a good idea, they are just stupid. PS3 has a shit ton of amazing games.
