The Xi3 Piston--the third-party "Steam Box" that Valve is helping finance--has been officially priced to start at $1,000.

The ultra-small Piston is packing 8GB of RAM and a 3.2GHz Quad Core AMD A10 processor. The standard $999.99 model comes with a 128GB SSD hard drive, with 256GB and 512GB models costing $1,339.99 and $1,749.99 respectively. The device is intended to sit under your television and be used in conjunction with Steam's Big Picture mode.

Preorder the device before March 18, and Xi3 will offer a $100 discount and the promise that customers will receive the grapefruit-sized PC during the "2013 holiday season."

The Piston isn't Valve's own Steam Box, which is also in production. Gabe Newell said last week that prototypes of Valve's machine should be going out within the next few months.

I really hope that Valve's Steam Box will cost much less than this cause for $1750 I could build a pretty cool gaming PC.

That price is devastating. I could build an IBM workstation with that kind of money.

I think you maybe able to build a gaming PC which is as good as the Steambox for less, but would it support all Steam games for Linux released in 2013, and would it come with technical support, and updates, so all games for Steam Linux work on Steambox.

Plus, would it be as small?

That thing's gotta have at least a GeForce 430 GPU to handle those games right. Plus, it's the only GPU I can think of with a form factor that can fit in there, AND perform well enough to justify the tiny form factor of the Piston.

that would range beyond 2000 dollars.

Okay, maybe not the 720.

I like the small size. I bet if Google Glass eye glasses comes out soon, and you can stream steam games to Google Glass the small size of the Piston will make it a good mobile gaming computer when combined with a wireless controller. The computer features of Piston can make Google Glass more feature-rich like being able to use a photo editor, video editor, and other desktop programs on the go without a laptop or tablet. Plus, you won't be limited to the 16-32GB of internal space on Google Glass if Google Glass comes with a memory card because you can use an App to record to Steambox SSD drive.

All The Piston needs is a battery which can power the Piston for a few hours.

Maybe Steam will just come out with a list of compatible computer parts which are compatible with Steam for Linux + Ubuntu Linux, so regular people and other PC makers like Alienware, Voodoo PC, and Dell XPS can make cheaper versions of the Steambox by using parts from other manufactuers which sell for less like Sapphire Video cards which usually cost less then other video card makers, but has the same Radeon or Nvidia chip on it.

I read there will be a Console quality version of the Steambox which is good enough for playing Steam games in console quality graphics like 720P-1080P, but not as good as a high end gaming PC which can play games above 1080P resolutions.

I think the console quality version of the Steambox would be cheaper.

Most likely, there would be a few versions of the Steambox for casual gamers who are on a budget, or just plan on using the Steambox with their HDTV as a console, and not a high-end computer.

I bet Steam just create an App or game with most of the popular older game ROMs which they get permission from the game maker like Sega, SquareEnix, and Namco to play on their Steambox since Steam now supports controllers.
