Square Enix has lifted the lid on its new vision for one of its biggest franchises, announcing Tomb Raider, an origins tale that goes back to the roots of Lara Croft.
A piece of artwork reveals a Lara that's markedly different to the one that's fronted the Tomb Raider games since 1995, looking much younger and much more ragged – thanks, no doubt, to the premise of the new game.
Promising to tell the story of Lara's very first adventure, Tomb Raider takes the heroine and strands her on a beach where she is 'on her own but not alone', with the emphasis said to be on survival.
"Forget everything you knew about Tomb Raider," said developer Crystal Dynamic's Studio Head Darrell Gallagher. "This is an origins story that creates Lara Croft and takes her on a character defining journey like no other."
Lara's last big console outing was in Tomb Raider Underworld, though she's had a more diminutive outing in Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light, which was well received when it launched this year.
There's no word on platforms or release dates, but expect more details to filter through as Game Informer's first look begins to get properly dissected.
