Valkyria Chronicles 3 is just a bit over two months away from Japanese release, and Sega has started off some major promotions for the game. Over the past week, the company has been holding demo events and press conferences to fill in all the missing pieces.

As previously reported, Valkyria 3 is the second PSP entry in the dramatic strategy series that first debuted on the PlayStation 3. We received part 2 in August, but Japan has been playing it since January, making the timing of part 3's January 27 Japanese release seem a bit more reasonable.

Sega gathered the press in Tokyo electronics capital Akihabara yesterday to announce some of its promotional plans for the game.

Sega and Good Smile Company are teaming up to create a couple of Nendoroid figures for heroines Riela and Imuka. Pricing was not announced, but the figures are due for March release.

Sega is also readying a two part animation for the game. This will feature the same voice cast as the game and will be released first through PlayStation Network, also in Spring. Of course, Valkyria Chronicles is no stranger to anime, as the first entry saw a more substantial conversion.

More directly tied to the game, Sega has announced some bonus download content. Buyers of either the retail or digital download version will get a download code for downloading an episode called "Chapter 0: Kurt's First Campaign." This tells the story of main character Kurt Irving's first campaign, which is something that you won't find elsewhere in the game.

Producer Shinji Motoyama has confirmed that additional download content is under consideration. During a fan demo event earlier this week, he said that the game does have the infrastructure in place, as evidenced by the Chapter 0 bonus, but nothing has been decided. If they do end up releasing download content, the staff would like to respond to fan requests regarding the type of episodes, Motoyama told fans at the event.

Finally, the best promotional item of all: a demo! Sega released a Valkyria 3 demo to PlayStation Store earlier today. Those with access to a Japanese PlayStation Store account can access the demo directly. Japanese games site 4gamer has also posted the demo online so you can also access it there (the link is the pink button midway through the page).

Valkyria Chronicles 3 is due for Japanese release on January 27. Release plans for the rest of the world have yet to be announced.

I wish it came out for PS3.

more info:

Sega Japan has sent out the latest media update for Valkyria Chronicles 3, giving us a look at one of the big changes for the sequel: character growth.

Similar to Valkyria 2, you have access to five troop classes: Scouts, Shocktroopers, Engineers, Lancers, and Armored Soldiers. New for Valkyria 3, you can easily change your characters between these classes. You will need to take consideration when doing this, though, as some characters are more adept in certain forms.

To go along with the change, the game changes how you raise your characters. You now distribute experience to five parameters that affect your entire unit as a whole. Previously, experience was distributed to individual troop classes.

Valkyria 3 also makes some changes to how you go about acquiring Potentials. As with past Valkyria game, the game has two types of Potentials, which can be thought of as a type of character-specific skill. Personal Potentials are an inborn characteristic of the character and will only change as part of the story. Battle Potentials are learned as you work through the game and build up your character.

Battle Potentials are now acquired via a new "Master Table" diagram. Using this diagram, you can get a sense of how you should build your characters up in order to unlock rare potentials, known as "High Potentials."

We've updated our media gallery with screens of all these latest Valkyria Chronicles 3 gameplay features. The gallery also has screens showing the main characters' special skills: Kurt's Direct Command move, Reila's Valkyria move and Imca's open fire mode.
