Square Enix's massive fighter pulls characters from across the long-standing franchise and pits them together in a world riddled with strife. As incredible as the game sounded, we previously had no word on whether the potential PSP hit would come stateside. All that changed today, however, as Square Enix has confirmed that Dissidia Final Fantasy will see a U.S. release mid next year.
The press release moves on to confirm a few facts Final Fantasy enthusiasts might be curious about. The story of Dissidia is a classic one. Cosmos, the goddess of harmony, is in an ageless struggle against Chaos, the god of discord. The two deities summon warriors from across time and space in order to engage in this conflict of light and dark. Surprisingly, the forces of Chaos are about to win, having gathered a virtually inexhaustible force. The game will be set against this unbalanced tide.
Square Enix also confirms several game modes that will be found in Dissidia, including Legacy mode (presumably the game's main story) and Fantasy match. There will also be similar community-oriented features in the U.S. release that can be found in the Japanese release. With all this and more, Dissidia looks to be one of the most promising titles for 2009.
