In Valve's new documentary celebrating the 25th anniversary of the Half-Life series, the company's co-founder Gabe Newell has shared his own thoughts about the differences between a delayed game and a rushed release.
He summed it up as "late is just for a little while, suck is forever" when touching on the challenges Valve faced in the lead-up to the release of Half-Life, which ultimately led to the game's release being pushed back a year.
"We could try to force this thing out the door, but that's not the company we want to be, that's not the people we want to be. That's not the relationship we want to have with our customers."
The quote has already been likened to "Miyamoto's most famous" line (which does not appear to actually be his quote), where it was believed he said, "a delayed game is eventually good, but a rushed game is forever bad".
Valve is still talking like that? I remember them saying that in 1995.
They are lying though. The only reason they don't release it because they find it better to.make a game then layoff and downside the capital expenses on the company and just sick the cash out of the same game for decades without having to generate more content.
It's exactly what happened with Rockstar. They created gta5 and it made so much money they slowed production of games.
A nice sentiment however I think most fans of Valve games would suggest they take this a little too far/use it as an excuse when really they just aren’t that interesting in making many games anymore.
