Valve is infamously tight-lipped about upcoming projects, but the prospect of a Linux-based “Steam Box” has been in the works for quite some time, and Newell remarked during his talk that more information about the future of Valve in the living room might be right around the corner.

“The next step in our contribution to this is to release some work we’ve done on the hardware side,” said Newell. ”Next week we’re going to be rolling out more information about how we get there and what are the hardware opportunities we see for bringing Linux into the living room.”

Good to hear that the Steambox would be running Linux, and it will be a game console for the Living Room. The Steam Box sounds like one of the most interesting game consoles these days.

I think a Steam box could pottentially put Xbox out of buisness. I think Sony would survive and know Nintendo would.

Maybe Valve decided they don't really need a hardware department because a Steambox is mainly a faster Linux gaming computer with a controller and the video cables needed to plug it into a TV, so PC Gamers can play PC games on the TV like a console.

There is already Big Picture Mode for Steam which make it easier for you to use a gamepad controller to play Steam games, and most PC these days have the video connectors needed to connect them to a TV, bigger monitor, projector, and other forms of displays.

Big Picture Mode is like the Steam Box, but all Windows, Linux, and Mac computers can use it already on the PC to play PC games on a TV without needing to wait for the Steam Box.
