Video downloads are coming to the Wii in a big way over in Japan. The Thursday morning edition of the Nihon Keizai Shimbun newspaper reported that a group of media companies and advertisers have marked the Nintendo system as the first platform for a new download service to begin next Spring.
According to the paper, seven companies consisting of Fuji Television, Nippon Television, Tokyo Broadcasting System, Dentsu. Com, Hakuhodo DY Media Partners, Internet Initiative, and Cyber Agent, will be investing in a Tokyo-based venture company called SkillUpJapan. This company will handle content distribution and copyright management for the new initiative.
The paper was vague on specifics regarding content and service plans for the new initiative. Television programs are expected to be made available following a delay of a few days. SkillUpJapan is also working with the above partners to develop business models for advertising and paid content.
Wii will be just the first target for the new service. SkillUpJapan also plans on working with PCs, cell phones, and mobile game machines. In the future, it hopes to deliver content overseas as well.
