The former treasurer of a University of Wisconsin-Madison fraternity blamed an addiction to video games for his alleged theft of more than $12,000 from the fraternity’s coffers, according to a criminal complaint.
Jose R. Tavarez, 21, who was treasurer of the Delta Theta Sigma fraternity on Langdon Street, told police that he used a fraternity debit card to buy video games because his own bank account is linked to his parents’ and he did not want them seeing that he spent his money on the games.
Tavarez was charged Tuesday with one count of theft in a business setting and four counts of modifying computer data, to allegedly cover his tracks and to avoid having to pay rent at the fraternity, according to the complaint.
A list of suspicious purchases on the card, compiled by fraternity officials, included about 70 purchases at game-oriented businesses, along with many others from online stores selling computer goods, according to the complaint. The purchases totaled about $12,280.
Tavarez is scheduled to be in court Thursday.
