So says a Canadian-led study, reports the National Post. According to the study, video games actually compel individuals to consume more food - even if they are not hungry.

Twenty-two young male test subjects sat for an hour in a comfy chair. Then, on separate ocassions, they'd spend an hour playing video games. The study's findings showed that after gaming, the teens gobbled up 80 more calories at lunch.

Blood work, however, didn't show any evidence that gaming actually made them hungrier.

"It's a worse story than just being a sedentary activity," said Dr. Chaput, a kinesiologist at the Children's Hospital of Eastern Ontario research institute. "When we play video games, yes, we burn few calories, but we also eat more."

Researchers theorize that food becomes a "reward" of sorts during gaming. It's not only gaming that apparently causes individuals to eat more - using the computer supposedly increases the desire to munch.

Next up, Dr. Chaput hopes to research whether the Wii also triggers the same over-eating effect found in this study or rather, simply the desire for Nintendo to release more Wii games.

ehhhhhh, I don't think there is any truth behind this.

I think if you have friends over to play games then you need to buy them food since gaming with friends without chips, soda, and snacks can be kind of a boring gaming party.

I would disagree. When I'm playing a game (console or pc) I just cannot eat because I must concentrate plus the munching sound can block out the game sounds lol. It's a different thing when surfing web...

that I can see, but I don't like to eat while I game.
Same, actually i eat much less on days when i play games for more than 6-7 hours.
I'm too concentrated on the game and "glued to the chair" that food is the last thing on my mind.

I do drink a lot of liquids when i play though, but that's never a bad thing.

I don't really like this story... They seem to make eating a little more food to be a bad thing.

Depends... If you are going above the daily limit of calories necessary for a healthy diet, then it isn't that good but if not, then you are okay. I guess it doesn't hurt to go over the limit once in a while though.

You know why test subjects agree to be test subjects right? Because they're poor. They're probably starving college students, so give them some cash for taking a study, and they spend it on food.

This study is ridiculous. 80 calories is like one cookie. OMG you ate a cookie, you fat greedy pig! Its not my fault, the game made me do it!

I don't see how that 'test' is a fair indication. As iebo said, it's only 80 more calories, not sure if you can draw much of a conclusion from that. I can see how it'd work for Wii and stuff where you move around a lot... but I guess I've also heard that using your brain also burns a few calories, so that may be it.

It could be nice to keep looking into if they design a better 'experiment', in my opinion.

That's probably true for me since I need some snacks beside me when I am playing a game so that I can eat while waiting for the to load.
