To be fair, a lot of people bought game consoles, and games last year, so a lot of people who want a next gen console, and games for their new consoles already own games to play on their console.
There are also a lot of people who are still very satisfied with their Xbox 360, PS3, Wii, Vita, 3DS, and other last gen consoles, so there may not be a huge demand for new consoles from people who are already satisfied with their last gen console. A lot of the games like TitanFall, Destiny, and Grand Theft Auto 5 on next gen consoles like the Xbox One and PS4 are also on last gen consoles like the Xbox 360, and PS3.
There are also now more gaming devices like tablets, and smartphones which can play games, and controllers like the Moga Pro made for smartphones and tablets which let you play games with a controller instead of on-screen buttons.
Plus, most decently priced desktop and laptop computers which cost $400-600 or more can play a lot of PC games on low to medium, and sometimes high video quality settings.
I don't read much into these, game makers state millions are playing their games weekly, game sales are strong and some people may not buy many games during a month because of what they bought last month or the coming holidays.
A lot of people most likely don't buy games and consoles during Christmas holiday because their friends, parents, and relatives may buy them games and consoles as Christmas gift during the holidays, or give them Gamestop gift cards to buy games after the holidays.
People also buy more non-gaming items to give as gifts to non-gamers like their mom during the holidays which make them have less money and time to buy games and game consoles for themselves during the holidays.
