Visual Novels, anyone? If the term's new to you click here.

Anyone here plays visual novels? I don't know if this belongs to this forum, feel free to move it! Thanks.

Going back, if you guys played VN, what games do you play? What can you say about them? Share your thoughts!

For me, I played a lot. However one game I really enjoy is the Rewrite by Key. At first you wouldn't think of something big might happen. Starts as very comedic, light-hearted, average day for our protagonist. Then bam, as the story goes on, you pick your choices. The story branches out to different routes. Each route have connection to each other until you complete all of them unlocking new routes and after completing that one, will also unlock last route which connects all of them. The story itself is amazing and gives message to us. The message is realistic and we should listen to it. I don't know but the story blows my mind. The twists, the intensity, the love story! Mixed feelings. A lot of things but they mesh well. I pretty much enjoyed whole of it. I was on my edge of my seat back then I was playing it.

I love Visual Novels! I'm not really sure if it counts as a Visual Novel exactly but Episode is a great app that's full of 'choose your own adventure' kind of stories. There's all sorts of different ones too and there's a huge community of writers that use the platform to release their own stories. You can find any kind of story imaginable there - from comedies, to horror, to dramas. New chapters are usually added every week, though it can depend on how the author chooses to release them. You can also find ones that are complete. Sadly, the Kindle version of the app hasn't had an update so I don't have access to the user created content or anything but the Android version is fantastic.

Thanks for the share. First time I heard it. I'm not sure if I searched the right one you're saying. Mind sending me the link of the app? I would like to check it out.

I know its huge in Japan, but I've never played any.

This is really what gets to me. I love the concept of visual novels, and they certainly seem like they can be fun and fairly light. But the graphics are usually over the top anime or cartoony and it detracts from the actual story. I wonder if there are any done that have some alternative, or at least realistic looking graphics.

I'm sure there are some if you look.

I've actually played quite a bit of visual novels before. They can be pretty fun, and wildly different. There are some that are only focused on aspects like fetishes, or romance. But there's some with very deep, and interesting gameplay. They're either RPG like or card game like. I think if you take a look at them, there's bound to be a few for you. That's even if you're not into the romance aspect of them at all.

There are some alternatives and most of them are indies/western-made. I'm sure have seen some, just forgot the names.

Yes, there are some RPG types! Quite enjoyable to raise your party stats. :)
I'm into romance but what I like more is the intensity while reading the story. There's this G-senjou no maou, it's a mystery VN. When some thrilling scene is shown, the music carries the tense of what's happening inside.

I've read quite a few, but as I mostly only play games I can get via Steam, I'm more limited to the OELVN's, although Sekai and MG are bringing Japanese content in as well. They just tend to be quite expensive, and while the price to hour ratio is usually acceptable, I still find it hard to drop as much money into them as I'd love to!

I haven't tried visual novels yet, but I truly loved the concept, it's like the best thing of my two favorite worlds.
I remember watching an anime that was actually based on a visual novel, it was called Amigami SS, and the story was so strange, it was definitely a visual novel material... and that's the closest that I've ever been to visual novels lol, I really need to do my research on them, it seems to be something that I will enjoy.
Thanks for sharing! :p

There are some free VNs on steam! Like Narcissu 1st & 2nd. :)

There are a lot of anime based on visual novel. :) You might've already watch some without noticing. Haha.

Yeah, there's a ton of free and cheap visual novels available on Steam, and while the quality can vary a bit, just check up on some reviews on e.g., http://steamcommunity.com/groups/vnvortex community and you're sure to find something to suit your tastes!

You could also try Itch.io, but I've found the general quality there to be... uh, questionable at best.

I've played a few and I definitely want to play more, but I don't find myself able to most of the time. Visual Novels are usually long, and they take a lot of time in the beginning for introductions and stuff before they get to the main story that's really the interesting part. I'm a slow reader as well (at about 200 WPM), so that doesn't really help. I played games like Grisaia no Kajitsu, Rewrite, and a few very short indie ones on Steam (that were quite enjoyable actually).

I'm in the process of reading an indie VN called Asphyxia on Steam. I only bought it because of the art. It doesn't look too 'cartoony' or anime-like. It actually looks a bit traditional, but it's so gorgeous looking I couldn't resist buying it. It might be to your liking. I also dislike over-moefied VNs that make the character designs look too boring and cringeworthy. I can deal with it when the story is good, but I don't like it.

Got to agree with that long introduction. There are some that have interesting intro though with good common route haha.

Same. I dislike the ones that have very big eyes that covers 30-50% of the face. Haha kinda disturbing for my taste. I can suffer if the story is really good but there are some that just unbearable.

Sure thing! Here's the links on GooglePlay and iTunes. They advertise it as a super girly game but all the stories in it aren't gooey romance stories. I've actually read some really great horror/thriller stories on there that really kept me on the edge of my seat.

Thanks for sharing this link! I just quickly glanced over the page and there's definitely a lot of them that I'm going to check out.

I'm actually not as familiar with Visual novels as I would like to be. I'm embarrassed to say the first one that I ever played was apart of a Saint's Row IV story line. I've also downloaded some as apart of X-box 360's indie games list for D/L. Either way I will get to playing more of them just because I would love to play one with a seriously good story to it.

While replying to another thread I thought of a couple of mobile games that I play that might appeal to people who like visual novels. High School Story and Hollywood U: Rising Stars have AMAZING storylines in them and they're continually releasing new quests in them. You're always finding out more about the main characters backstories and there's also special characters with special storylines that they release often. The set up isn't really like a visual novel though. It shows each character while they're speaking and they do movement relevant to what they're saying but it also has plain text for narrative. I definitely think it's worth giving a shot. I've been playing them for nearly a year now and I love both games.

I'm a huge fan of anime/manga, but I hate to say that I've played only around 10 VNs. I love them, but I just cannot stand how slow it is to read them. I'll always have a soft spot in my heart for Chaos;Head, though I hear the anime is atrocious and not worth watching.

Some good starter VNs that are generally tossed around are: Fate/Stay Night, Saya no Uta, Steins;Gate, and Little Busters. Just be warned that the first two have h-scenes, and Saya no Uta has a rape scene and some mind-break.
