Charles Roven, the producer of The Dark Knight, Get Smart, and The International, has acquired the screen rights to the 1980s animated TV series Voltron.
According to The Hollywood Reporter, Roven will produce Voltron via his Atlas Entertainment banner along with Richard Suckle and Steve Alexander and Jason Netter of Kickstart Entertainment and World Events' Ted Koplar. No studio is involved yet.
"It's undeniably impressive that Voltron has sustained itself globally for a quarter of a century," Roven told THR. Referring to the similar giant robot film franchise Transformers, Koplar said "unlike other robotic action movies, Voltron is the personification of the human spirit, a quality that will set this movie apart."
Voltron had been in-development for years at producer Mark Gordon's company until New Regency put it into turnaround last year. Justin Marks had penned the screenplay and newcomer Max Makowski was lined up to direct.
