Ways That The PS4 Could Fail?

It's still possible the PS4 could fail... Although right now it seems like the probability of that happening is extremely low.

There is a tremendous amount of hype and good press for the PS4 that Sony would have to burn through. And right now it seems like they've figured out what people want and are intent on giving that.

Nintendo hasn't had much luck with their console (from poor sales resulting in price cuts to lack of great games coming out and developers not putting anything out for Nintendo). And microsoft has been facing massive backlash since May. (Even though they've backtracked on a lot of their old policies, many people still aren't ready to go back to microsoft just yet. They're worried about the future. And many don't think that just because they caved in after E3 that people should go running back, not after they were fully intent on forcing that crap on the xbox one.)

If the PS4 were going to fail, it would take an absolutely massive issue... I mean larger than the RRoD since microsoft was able to survive that. (Even though fail rates were estimated to be as high as 50% for several years. At least until the slim version was released.)

Ways it could fail:

  • The games they promise don't come out and get delayed, a lot
  • The hardware has problem after problem
  • Online play has not gotten better than PS3 now that we're paying for it
  • No good games come out for it after the launch window release

More people using a PC, Tablet, Smartphone, and the many cheaper alternative consoles like Nvidia Shield, Ouya, iConsole, Madcatz Mojo, Gamepop, Gamepop Mini, Gamestick, iConsole, rumored Amazon and Google console, Onlive console, Moga Pro, Apple TV, Roku Games, etc could make the PS4 have fewer gamers since there are many regular and older people who just play games like Pac-Man, Tetris, Pong, Counter Strike, Angry Birds and Bejeweled and play games when they are bored, and don't care much about exclusives, story lines, and unique gameplay, so a cheaper $100-200 console or their current PC and laptop could be good enough for playing most of their favorite games.

I think the PS4 wouldn't fail, but have fewer gamers than the PS3 because of more gamers sticking to electronics they own like PC, Tablet, Smartphone, and cheaper alternative consoles than upgrading to a mainstream game console like the PS4.

Plus, many affordable $500 desktop PCs thesedays come with better video cards which are good enough for playing many games. If it is not, upgrading to a $100 video card like the Nvidia 650 can make it play many games on High video quality settings.

The multimedia features of next gen consoles don't seem very worth it since a Roku, Apple TV, and Google Android TV boxs can be bought for under $100, and they are good enough for playing Netflix, Hulu, YouTube, etc while also using less electricity, and making less noise because they are fanless.

I think the biggest way for them to fail is the PS4 only being JUST better than the PS3 in a lot of areas, and not fixing a lot of the issues. The online availability is probably the biggest thing that could go wrong for them this way, as with the PS3 it just isn't that great.
