If you’re the sort that needs a lot of storage and you’d rather just buy one big hard drive as opposed to multiple hard drives, then you might be pleased to learn that Western Digital has begun shipping two new 6TB hard drives.
Now we know what you’re thinking, 6TB is going to be expensive, and normally you would be right, except that in this case they’re not. Western Digital has released two new 6TB hard drives as part of their Red and Green lineup. If you need the drive for more enterprise purposes with more NAS and error correction features, then the WD Red model will be the one for you, and for 6TB it will only set you back $299. As for the WD Green, which is aimed at those looking for lower power consumption, it will retail for $279.
I don't see my self being able to use a 6TB, and honestly I don't want to use that. What if I lost it and or got stolen? Losing even 2 TB worth of data would leave me ill.
Granted though I would love to put this into my future systems as that is what I would need it for.
Most of the files you buy online like music, movies, TV shows, and pictures can usually be re-downloaded from sites like Amazon, Apple iTunes, etc.
You can also buy another external 6TB drive to backup your computer 6TB drive.
This hard drive is good for PC Gamers who buy a lot of Steam and other PC games which cost a few dollars during a PC Games sale, or given away for free during giveaways. There are probably hundreds of free to play games like Team Fortress, Dota 2, League of Legends, etc which will also use TBs of space if you install a lot of free to play games on your hard drive.
Windows program sizes are getting bigger and bigger these days like the Google Chrome web browser uses 300MB of space according to Iobit uninstaller. I imagine future versions of Google Chrome, and other programs using 1GB of space, so if you use a lot of programs and games, you quickly fill up a few TB.
I bet Windows 9 will use 10-20 GB of space, and future versions of Windows using TBs of space because they add too many features, and programs to it.
More people are also installing Linux, and UNIX on the same hard drives as their Windows drive to save money by only using one drive to install all their OSes on.
You can only re-download the files you need, or download a few big files each day like how some gamers who buy a lot of Steam games during Steam summer sale, but may not download them all at once because they don't have a lot of free space on their hard drive, or their ISP does not allow them to download over 60GB of files per month.
If you stick to backing up your files once a day or week, or use backup software like the Backup program which comes with Windows XP-8 to backup your files it makes backing up stuff easier.
I think it is better to have more space since future programs and games could be in the 100s GB-TBs in size like open world MMORPG or large RPGs with huge worlds.
