I think renting a modem, router, or both is expensive if you plan on sticking with the same ISP for more then a year if the modem rental is 10 dollars a month since you be paying 120 dollars a year.

But, rentals would be a better deal if you run a big business, not very tech savvy, or your time is very valuable since if the modem or router breaks, you can phone up the ISP, and they would replace your old one, and setup all your computers, so they can connect to the internet for free as long as you pay the monthly fee.

Rentals can also be a better deal if you don't stay at one city for more then a year or few months because you travel a lot for work like the Army or school like you're a foreign student, or you move a lot because of expensive home rental prices.

I also feel ISP want you to buy your modem from them instead of renting because it might make it less attractive for some users to switch to a different ISP since a cable modem does not work on a DSL, Fiber, ISDN, or T3 ISP, but you already spent 100 dollars or more on a modem, so if you switch you need to buy a new DSL, Fiber, or T3 modem instead of just returning a rental if you plan to switch ISP providers.

depends on if your ISP allows it. I know people who own their own modems have more problems vs those who rent.
