What console will surpass the 3DS?

it's funny cause the wii u isn't a handheld.
and to answer the question, i think the 4ds/ whatever comes next will surpass it. maybe.

It depends on a number of factors that the new console will have to answer "yes" to pass...
1. Does it work?
2. Is it Nintendo?
3. Does it play games?
4. Does it have a 3D screen?
5. Does it have a HD 3D screen?
6. Does it have a Zelda game?
7.Does it have a Mario game?
8. Does it have a touch-screen?
9. Will it sell fast?
10. Is it FUN to play?
If the answer is yes to all these questions, then you have a 3DS-beater.

Definitely the next DS. The PSVita has been a big letdown and I expect Nintendo to win the handheld war for the next generation, unless Sony quickly produces something that ticks off PSVita owners and takes the market by storm.

Ultimately, I think we are getting to tablet gaming. Projections are already forecasting that the more people buy Android and Apple products, the less they need a dedicated handheld system. The next DS will need to have more apps and do more things well to be able to compete and win over that fast-growing demographic of casual gamers.

Uhh... why would they combine a Wii and a Ds when they are already making WiiU and have come out with a 3DS?

Well unless you think the Wii U and the 3DS are the last consoles they're ever going to make.

The WiiU has a lot in common with the 3DS. Touchscreen tablet controls, with 3dtv compatibility. In some ways it's like a high powered bigscreen 3DS.

It stands to reason that with the advancement of technology, they may be able to produce a future high-powered handheld capable of porting WiiU titles.

this. although i play games a LOT. (one i racked 15 hours of lay time in one day) i always thought the ds needed a few more apps to be useful for more then just gaming. if it could do something like facetime, or just have useful little things like a weather forecaster and a good note system, more people would swarm towards the 3ds/ 4ds/ ????ds

I think if Nintendo keeps the 3DS clam-shell design but makes a few improvements they can easily win over customers from any other company.
The new system should...
Have larger, higher definition screens
Longer battery life
3G/ 4G connectivity (the one thing the Vita got right)
More practical apps
If they add these features, I am sure the system would not only beat the 3ds, but also beat any other handheld device.

Firstly, why the hell would it be called a 4DS? You can't just add an extra number on. It doesn't make sense.

Also, I assume you're all aware that most of Nintendo's systems have been released as a handheld and console in each generation, since their first console...
Game & Watch (1980-1991) and NES (1983)
Game Boy (1989) and SNES (1990)
Game Boy Color (1998) and Nintendo 64 (1996)
Game Boy Advance (2001) and GameCube (2001)
Nintendo DS (2004) and Wii (2006)
Nintendo 3DS (2011) and Wii U (2012)

Although technically, the SNES was 4th generation, and Game Boy was 3rd generation.... however, there was no new handheld in the 4th generation by Nintendo.

So, instead of treating the Wii U as the successor to the Nintendo 3DS, or as some idiots do, saying things like "WTF? They released the 3DS. Now they're releasing yet another console?", just remember, the Nintendo 3DS is a handheld, and the successor to the Nintendo DS. The Wii U is a console, and a successor to the Wii.

Everyone should already know this.

Now, the next handheld will NOT be called a Nintendo 4DS. If it was.... it would have to mean something. Otherwise, they'd be in interviews like this:

"Why is the handheld called Nintendo 4DS?"
"Well, it's the successor to the Nintendo 3DS...."

They'd probably look and sound stupid, right?

In otherwords, Yoshian, shut up about the '4DS'... at least make up something that makes sense. There isn't even a 4th dimension.
No, it's not time.

A 4ds? 4D is time travel (If I am correct) to a 4Ds would be some sort of time machine.
