What do you think makes the Legend of Zelda series special?

Think about it. If any game like the TLoZ was released today it would be slated as being 'generic', 'clichéd', 'unoriginal' and so on. So why can it get away with what other games can't. True, it has a reputation but every new game plays nearly the same way and they all still achieve sky-high scores (well, all the big-budget games do).
So, your opinions on this?

There's an incredible amount of polish in every Zelda game I've ever played. Plus, there aren't too many other series out there that give you 100+ hours of gameplay each time a new game is released.
 
Makes makes it special, in my opinion, is the adventure itself. Knowing that youre in for a long adventure, visiting many places makes the game awesome. Almost like how you travel in final fantasy, but not skipping the journey before the main event. Before you access warps in the loZ games, you have to manually go there by horse, boat, train, etc. Its always knowing that playing a Zelda game will have that long journey.
