I think 2 TB is the best hard drive size for desktop computers since a 2 TB hard drive cost about $90 or less at online stores like Newegg, Tigerdirect, Amazon, etc while a 1-1.5 TB cost between $60-80 online, or even $90 depending on the brand, features, cache size, and model.
Although, there are also 3TB desktop hard drives which cost $119 which could be worth it if you share your desktop PC with many pc gamers, video editors, and other people in your home which also use a lot of storage space for movies, games, programs, music, and high resolution photos.
500GB drives don't really seem like a good choice these days unless you just plan on using it to install Windows, or Linux at a Internet Cafe, Library, or a old person's computer who mainly use their PC for checking e-mail, Facebook, YouTube, Typing documents, and printing stuff. Plus, 500GB drives can cost between $55-60 or more, and if you pay $30 more you get more 1.5 TB more of free space.
