I like HTML since it is easier then php which can break your whole page if one line is coded incorrectly.

I thought Java was mostly used to make executable files, and need to be run from an applet.

Yes but you can use Java to create webpages and such. Though Javascript is easier to use and easily works into HTML. But I'm so used to Java, that I use it.
Applets are needed to run them on sites and such, in which the browser needs Java to be enabled.

html and css get my vote.
I've only used HTML to make a website so far. I should learn other ways.

Same for me, but i been using Joomla and other CMSes which are pretty useful for quickly making a site.
