Let's say you're one of those people who hates on the game before its even out due to it seemingly too much like the DS original. What would Nintendo have to do to make you consider the game not a rehash?

Would they have to change the plot/villain?

Change the graphics style?

Change the music?

Change the settings to not be similar to those in other New Super Mario Bros games?

All the above?

With everything you stated, it is a rehash.

Graphics- They're going to be the same since it was the same in the DS and Wii version.

Music- It was pretty much the same for the past 2 games as well.

Locations and over world themes seem to never change thoughout Mario history.

New villian- Bowser has been the main villian in 2D games since forever. With the exeption of Wart. A lot of people actually hated Wart so they're going to use Bowser. Plus replacing Bowser for the 2D game would be very different from the "Princess is kidnapped by moster, hero kill monster and saves princess." They'd have to make the replacement pretty good to impress the fans.

Peach not being captured- It's the only that ever happens in the Mario series. Without that happening, there would be no reason for Mario to go out and fight Bowser. How many times do you recall Mario and Bowser fighting just for the heck of it? I can't think of a time like that. It's always because Bowser either kidnapped Peach or he's about to.

Though these are all elements that make up the series and I don't blame them for not changing it in fear of displeasing the fans.

Wait, are you saying that the Beach theme from NSMBWii is the same as that of NSMBDS?

Also, do you reckon there's a chance that the music in NSMB2 will be new? Or are you one of those people who assume that just because the demos use NSMBWii music, then the actual game will also use it?

The soundtrack is usually the last thing that's added to the game.... and maybe they're using old demos they made weeks ago, and they've been working on the soundtrack since, or at the same time....

Also, the game comes out in Japan in just slightly over a month, July 28th, to be exact, so it's very nearly finished...

The entire game seems pretty awesome, IMO, and appears to be bigger than the other 2, but I might be wrong....
New Super Mario Bros has exactly 80 levels (not counting cannons, Toad Houses, etc)

New Super Mario Bros Wii has 77 stages (not including mini games, Toad Houses, etc)

It's said that New Super Mario Bros. 2 will have OVER 80 NEW stages.

Now, the question is... how much do you bet we'll get 30 unique stages and the other 50 will be rehashes of the same game a la Super Mario 3D Land's Special Worlds?

Also, IIRC, Super Mario Bros. 3 holds the record for the most single stages in a 2D Mario platformer, with a total of 90 stages -- in addition it also apparently holds the record for the highest number of stages in a single world, with both World 6 and 7 having a whopping 14 stages each, AND possibly the record for the highest number that a level is given, with the standard 'World-Level' format, which is 6-10. Do you think NSMB2 will have as many stages? They say "over 80", and 90 IS "over 80", but you know. I think it's obvious that Super Mario Land with a microscopic 12 stages has the least number of stages in a 2D Mario platformer.

New Worlds, New villain, and new story
I still don't really think it's a rehash though

Apparently they reused the graphics, music from NSMBWii...I wouldn't expect much.

*facepalm* --- can we not 'apparently' the game to death? Wait until the game's finished, which'll be in a few days most likely, being as ... (like I've said about 5 times today) Japan gets it in only 4 and a half weeks.

I think ANY of those things would help. And yes, it is completely fair to judge a game based on the several videos and images released because these are the things Nintendo WANTS us to see to get us excited about the game. When they premier things like a Zelda game or even Mario Galaxy, we are immediately greeted with an epic score of music and graphics that show off how new and exciting these worlds are. With NSMB2, we are greeted with the exact same music and graphics of the previous game and we want for more.

Even the main new mechanic is a lame excuse, as coin farming is probably one of the least favorite things anyone had in mind with Mario. In other titles, we get new power ups, new allies, new Yoshi abilities. In NSMB2, they show off how you can make more coins appear. WOW. Now, instead of waiting until the second level to get 99 lives, I can do it in level one!

Like I said in the beginning, had ANY of the materials for the new game shown ANYTHING new, then it wouldn't feel like a rehash. Small changes make the Mario franchise go. A lack of change just shows stagnancy, lack of imagination, and complacency in pushing a product just for the sake of advertising.

But hey, the theme of the game IS making money, after all.
