What's needed to make Wario Land a popular series again?

Say with a game on 3DS. It can be done, the series is about as popular as Metroid or maybe even more so and on the same general level as Donkey Kong Country.

So what would Nintendo need to do to make it popular on say the level of Donkey Kong Country Returns? Could Retro Studios manage to save the series like they did for Metroid with the Prime series and Donkey Kong Country with Returns?

Because I've always thought with the right staff and decisions the series could at least become a B list Nintendo series that sells a good four or so million copies a game.

I'd love to see a game like WarioWorld as a platformer. You know what I mean. I'm starting to get a little bored by the simplicity. 'Shake It' was horrible. Never found that game as good. Maybe more interesting levels?

My answer would be a WarioLand with more complicated graphics and levels with more interesting features and depth. I know, graphics isn't too important though.

After looking at the screenshots from the game that this guy with a wonderful name mentioned, I think it would be better with a new Wario World..

^ Wario World was a fun game to play. Too bad I lost mine. Heck, I wouldn't mind having a sequel to Wario World or a Wario World based Wario game.

Now you're talking!!! I would love to see a revamped Wario Land game, not Wario World or Wario: Master Of Disguise (I haven't actually played Shake It) It must be a true Wario Land game. It needs to resemble Wario Land 2, 3 or 4 (more so like 2 or 3). Nothing else!!!
The game needs to have different changing abilities (such as turning into a bat when touched by one, or turning into a zombie when touched by one, or becoming flat or inflated) that Wario uses to his advantage. It should also have pirates and/or genies as the main enemy.
A cool thing about Wario Land 2 & 3 is that you don't ever die. Sure, you lose coins, but you don't die. This way the game can be hard (maybe even extremely hard i.e. Wario Land 3), but you won't die, you just need to try and try again. Wario Land 3 was great for that reason. Wario Land 4 did not do that and in my opinion it lacked because of it. The 'no hearts' thing was something that was quirky and cool about Wario Land.
I also would like to see the CDs again, like they had in Wario Land 4. It was cool to collect a CD from each level. They really had nothing to do with any of the levels, it was just something to collect and listen to. They had a CD room where you could go and listen to the CDs you collected. There were some weird songs! Also, there were 18 CDs to be collected, but only 16 slots in the CD room. So, you had to replay the game to get hear the other songs. Such a cool concept, especially because the songs were pretty long and very interesting.
I want to see the 4 treasure chests per level thing, like from Wario Land 3. I also want to see the alternate routes, like in Wario land 2. Multiple endings is always a big plus.
Also, I would like to see more hidden areas that can only be found by bashing through walls or butt stomping the ground. Wario Land 2 had A LOT of hidden little areas where you could get a bunch of coins and free guys. Wario Land 4 didn't have this as much, which was a little disappointing.
The game should be a 3D 2 D scroller, sort of like how they are doing the NEW Super Mario Bros games.
Now for how Wario should look. He needs the purple and yellow theme. Not the goofy Wario Ware theme. I'd like him in purple overalls and a yellow shirt and hat.
You know, one cool thing that might really be a hit is to have Mario be the enemy. Can you imagine that?! Maybe Wario is jealous of his coinage that Mario recently gathered from NEW Super Mario Bros 2, so he's trying to steal it. Mario could be just trying to play keep away with his coins, not necessarily be evil, but annoying. Either way, Wario should have the chance to take out Mario once and for all!!! Hehe.

Obey Wario! KILL MARIO!!!!

This prompted me to search for Wario World. First site that popped up was this strange thing: http://www.warioworld.com/

Not sure what the hell that is. But anyways, I haven't played many Wario Land games, but they do seem pretty entertaining.
