What's the fun of tournament arc in anime?

What do you all think about tournaments in anime?
Almost all of them are very popular like Reborn, Yu Yu Hakusho, Fairy tail etc. What do you like in those tournaments? Just battles?

They can be good if done right like in Hunter x Hunter, but most tend to copy or just be sad versions.
