What's the worst case of "buying something from the shops that's already past its sell-by/expiry dat

We just bought a packet of 'sweets' or 'candy' if you wish, or whatever you call them.

Here's a picture of the packet:

Anyway, when we opened it, we noticed they were all hard. As in pretty much "rock solid". Not only that, but all, barring the odd few, were literally glued together in a single block. Some even squashed into each other.

We then thought it was just a case of them just being very sticky, and hard. Then we looked at the back.
The "Best Before" date (or the 'expiry date' if you want)? It said:
11 2011 --- which means November 2011.

So, they have something that expired in November 2011, .... as late as July 2012? Which makes it 7-8 months old.

Have you ever bought something, or seen something, like that, in a shop that sells food, in which the food has already expired ages ago? Like, say you got something today, and it expired about 2 years ago, just to exaggerate a bit?

I never had that problem at a store. However at school I got milk that was 2 months past the expiration date. So I went up to the lunch lady and said, "This expired 2 months ago." So I got a free one. This one was like 5 days past. So I just drank it.

Once in the candy machine at my job I bought a 3 musketeers bar and when I opened it the darn thing was ALL white. Check the expiration date? Sure I did, two years before I bought the candy. 0.0

wtf? sorry for the double posting but really man. WTF? never drink milk past at least two days it's expiration date. It can be harmful for your stomach and make you very sick. That's without counting infections that the milk might caught during decomposition.

Well luckily I didn't get sick or anything, unless I forgot. Though I guess I'd rather drink 5 day old milk rather than drink 2 month old milk. Plus I hate to bother people and I already went up there once. I didn't want to be a burdon.

Well ....one can seriously get ill and who knows... We might end up dead because of some sort of food poisoning.

I usually check for those expiration dates but sometimes I do forget about them.. ..

I feel it is best to not buy food which is past the expiry date, but some dry food like candy, potato chips, cereal, and other dry food maybe safe to eat after a few days or more after the expiry date.

I watched a TV show where a family froze a lot of almost expiring milk in a large freezer, so it is safe to drink the milk after unfreezing it. I think the family is saving some money on electricity to run the freezer after the milk has frozen because the frozen milk will keep the freezer cold even if there is a power outage because there is less warm air which stays in the freezer if most of the freezer is filled with food, milk jugs, and ice cubes.
