I've only played Galaxy1, so it's the only one I can vouch for.

Galaxy had more of a focus on the spacey atmosphere, and was pretty mind-blowing when it came out. Galaxy 2 got rid of the space stuff and it seemed to have more a familiar Mario style, which I didn't like. Galaxy 2 kind of improved a little, but honestly, the green stars were boring as hell to grab, some of the galaxies also bored me, and the orchestral score wasn't as great, IMO.

I prefer Galaxy 1.

Grandmaster Galaxy. It's a really hard galaxy that has a few parts to it. It has a dare devil comet and it's the hardest thing in the game and I never beat it. So I don't even know what the final, final reward is.

Super Mario Galaxy 2 had better gameplay in my opinion, but the original Galaxy just had more... soul, if that makes any sense. The whole gravity-flipping thing just isn't nearly as jaw-dropping when it's done a second time. Galaxy 2 was notably harder, though, and I appreciate that. If there's one thing I love from both games, it's the music. They both have absolutely amazing soundtracks.

Anyways, I think I'd have to say that I like the original Galaxy better because it had a more in-depth story and the game itself was new and fresh for the Mario series. Unlike a lot of his recent handheld outings... (Which I still enjoy, by the way.)
