White Knight Chronicles only recently made it out in the English speaking world. But it was a 2008 release in Japan, meaning the wait for the sequel has been a long one.
That wait is at long last coming to an end. Sony and developer Level-5 recently announced a summer time frame for the game in Japan and started opening up with story, character and gameplay details.
Fully titled White Knight Chronicles: Awakening of Light and Darkness (the subtitle is our unofficial translation), the sequel is set a year after the events of the original. Based off some early story details, the focus this time seems to be on the western Republic of Foria.
Two new characters announced for the game are from Foria. Fifteen-year-old Miu is grand daughter of a former Forian leader, Duke Durham. Scardyne is a Forian general who leads Miu to safety following an internal disruption in the republic. The two come into contact with Leonard, hero from the first White Knight, and they all travel together.
Level-5 looks like it will be retaining the basics of White Knight's unique battle system, which blends real time and menu-based combat. Similar to that game, you'll call out giants when in a pinch. It looks like you'll have access to additional giants this time around.
Expect some presentational improvements in the combat area, with updated visual effects and the addition of "Live Talk," a system through which characters make comments while you battle.
You'll have more to do during combat. The action gauge has been sped up, and you now have access to dash and guard commands. Weapons have new weapon-specific skills, which promise to make the various combat roles for attackers, defenders and so-forth, clearer. You'll also have access to counter attacks and will now be able to guard at your own will.
The battle fields, and the enemies that populate them, are also seeing some changes. Changes to weather and season will have effects on the battle field. You'll encounter new types of monsters, some likely to present new challenges.
As with the first White Knight, the sequel will be playable in both solo and online multiplayer modes. Level-5 hasn't said what to expect from the online mode, although screenshots suggest that you'll be able to play as a party of six this time.

Once the first one goes down in price I will get it.
