Well, who do you think will be still be in the console game/still be doing well when this generation comes to a close in about five or so years?
Nintendo?
Microsoft?
Sony?
Valve?
Ouya?
Because to be honest, I suspect we could even see pretty much all of them run into trouble in the upcoming generation.
Nintendo's in a crisis with the Wii U's low sales and stuff.
Microsoft's got the spectre of the NSA and data snooping looming over them with the Xbox One, and with them being seen as 'complisant' with the US government's activities, they could be in trouble sales wise...
Sony has to make their next console sell to make up for the four years or so it took for the PS3 to become profitable (and somehow save the Vita).
Ouya's basically crashed and burned months after the Kickstarter with awful sales and a poor reputation. They've also come under criticism for advertising ROMs and emulators as something you can use on their system (not for allowing it, for explicitly advertising it in their marketing materials)
And while Valve is doing fine, I have to wonder whether their 'Steam Box' will catch on. Or whether the internet audience might eventually turn against them for their use of DRM and attempts to make PC gaming like console gaming. There's definitely a sort of backlash starting in some corners.
Heck, even smartphone games might have problems soon, the tactics of free to play game makers are becoming something many see as extremely unethical at best and downright exploitative at worst. Oh, and I suspect one day, Apple and Google could well be in a bit of legal trouble over the stuff they're letting through on their app stores.
So who do you think's getting through the next generation or two intact and why?
