There are some people who don't really like female characters being the lead protagonist in movies. I don't understand why they feel that way. I don't have any problems with female's being the lead actor as long they played the role very well.

Two of my all time favorite would be Angelina Jolie in Tomb Raider and Milla Jovovich in Resident Evil.

Milla Jovovich was awesome. Mehn, she killed her role in all her RE movies.
 
I've always admired Drew Barrymore. She is around my age so I grew up with her in various roles. While she hasn't done drama per se, she is quite a versatile actress that has come a long ways.
 
Scarlett Johansson is another female character I love so much. Her role in the Avengers was so good.
 
Katharine Hepburn is my favourite female actors. Hepburn was a real pioneer, who embodied the persona of a strong-willed, independent woman. There's no better female actor then her, with the list of awards she's won to show for it.
 
I like Halle Barry in the X-Men franchise and in the John Wick franchise.

I also like Brie Larson as Captain Marvel.

I also like Jamie Lee Curtis in the Halloween movies.
