To be fair, there's a difference in difficulty between 'new' 2D Mario games like the New Super Mario Bros series and older ones like the NES titles. The former are much easier than the latter (as is Super Mario World on the SNES).

You are right about that, even Super Mario 3D Land is much easier than any other 3D Mario ive played. I guess Nintendo is just trying to make there games easy enough so anyone can enjoy them, with the Mario series at least. Seems like many game companies today are aiming towards this goal, to make games less frustrating and more easy to pick up and play.
The nostalgia definitely will do it so adults will buy the games as much as the kids will. I know my parents will lose interest in playing galaxy very easily, but can play NSMBW for hours. it's what they're familiar with.
