Why do Nintendo always treat 3D Mario games as more important?

Especially graphics and music wise, they were right lazy with those aspects of the New Super Mario Bros games, yet Mario Galaxy 1 and 2 got months of work and a live orchestra.

Not saying some music isn't good (Castle theme in both = win), but there's more than a slight difference in sound quality between this:

I swear someone there has an obsession with 3D in that series.

Personally, I don't see the difference in 'importance*

the 3d games do seem to have more quality---sent from my wii

Maybe it's because every time that Nintendo makes a 2D Mario game, they try to be all classic about it. It probably takes less time and effort to create a classic game with retro graphics. It takes more time to create the biggest Wii blockbuster of the year or whatever.
