Why do people drive cheap small cars which are sometime less safe?

I think most people buy small cars which are less safe in a car accident with a larger car because small cars are cheaper to buy, use less gas, and maintenance cost is cheaper over time. Some small car owners may also be poor, so having money for food, and medical bills can be more important than buying a safer big car.

A few small cars like the Fiat 500 have nice classic designs which aren't available on other cars like vans.

If you want a very basic new car with as few non-essential as possible like roll up manual windows, manual adjusting side windows, manual locks, no touchscreen, no power locks, no power steering, no air conditioning, steel wheels with hubcaps, drum brakes, no sunroof, etc, your only new car option maybe a basic cheap small car like the Nissan Versa, Smart Fourtwo, Chevy spark, and Kia Rio, or a offroad jeep or basic work truck which both cost more.

Some people may want to save more money by owning a small cheap car which uses less gas, so they can buy other things like video games, or retire earlier without debt like car payments for a more expensive car.

Small car drivers are less likely to scrap, or crash into other cars and objects when driving normally by obeying the law. Long cars like bigger vans where another car sometimes crash into a van because it takes longer for a van to pass other cars which are beside it, or driving toward its side. A good handling small car like Ford Focus RS can make sharp fast turns and slowdown or accelerate faster to avoid accidents compared to a large offroad truck which may flip over because the truck is not designed to turn sharply and quickly at higher speeds.

Lightweight small cars can be more fun to drive if the car has a somewhat powerful engine.

Cheap small cars are cheaper to modify because 3rd-party parts don't use as much metal and plastic.

I think they like the small size to be honest. I know some people say the small cars are completely useless on any snow covered ground and even on really wet pavement.

I agree the size of small cars can attract buyers. Some older, overweight, disabled and short people may prefer a car which is closer to the ground, so they can walk into the car, and don't need to climb into a car, or use a ramp or short stairs like a taller truck with very big tires.

It is strange that people say that small cars are useless in snow or really wet pavement since in a lot of big cities there are drivers who drive small cars in snow and really wet pavement. If they live in a small town with few small cats, they can search the internet to find tons of videos of people driving small cars in snow and wet pavements.

Well, they couldn't afford and not to mention that the car line time is less.

So may be that's the reason...

Some people may also pick cheap small cars because it can be more reliable, safer and have more features than the current car which they own because their current unreliable car is breaking down at random times when they drive it on the road, rusting, failing car brakes, and have metal and plastic parts which are bent or cracked from previous accidents and old age.

Buying a cheap small car is safer than continuing to drive an unreliable car which may fall apart or fail them in the near future.

Most cheap small cars in North America have decent reliability and safety features which is better than most very old cars which may not have basic safety features like airbags, disc brakes, seatbelts. Older cars sometimes have brakes take a very long time to stop the car when moving compared to newer cheap cars.

Driving a more modern cheap car can be a better idea than saving up more money to buy a more expensive car where you may not have enough money until many months to years latter, and continuing to drive an unsafe car which can more likely put yourself and other drivers and pedestrians at risk of being injured.

In some places like desert towns with poisonous animals like rattle snakes, driving a cheap small car is safer than using a bicycle, walking, and riding a horse where your body does not have a hard metal shell and glass which protected from poisonous snakes, tigers, and criminals like robbers and bullies.
