It is easier to get members if a forum, or blog is free. A lot of people make websites for fun, and as a way to meet and connect with other people who are interested in the same hobbies like music, games, forums, and computers. Making websites can also be very relaxing.

One of the main reasons people make their website free because small to medium sized forums and blogs are generally pretty affordable for people with jobs if you pick a good host which does not rip you off. Decent web hosting can be as cheap as $50-60 a year, and domain names are usually 7-10 dollars a year. Plus, it is not very hard to earn the money back online from advertising, affiliate links, and selling your own products and services online to earn back the 70 dollars for hosting and domain bills per year.

If you have something very important or useful to offer like Google, Facebook, DeviantArt, Wikipedia, you can generally make back the cash from paid services like Adwords, and sponsored links, video ads and donation if it is a non-profit like Wikipedia.

Well, I just do it for fun really. I just like socializing and meeting new people, and it can be a blast.

I agree, expression should be free and the same goes with friendships with members on forums. DeviantArt is a great example of a site which lets members express themselves for free.

meh, DA is fine if your art is clean and of your own. beyond that then the DA admins might get pissy.
