A recent study says it has found the reasons for why people to like to game.
Scientists at the University of Essex concluded that games are the "ideal platform for people to 'try on different hats' and take on a characteristic they would like to have." The study consisted of "hundreds" of casual game players in a laboratory as well as a thousand hardcore gamers who played titles like The Sims and Call of Duty.
Research shows that when given the opportunity players felt better about themselves when acting through a new identity, whether through a different gender, hero, or villain, for example.
"A game can be more fun when you get the chance to act and be like your ideal self," explained Dr Andy Przybylski, a contributing researcher. "The attraction to playing videogames and what makes them fun is that it gives people the chance to think about a role they would ideally like to take and then get a chance to play that role."
The study looked at players' emotion and motivation to play and found that the enjoyment element of video games were higher when there was the least overlap between someone's actual self and their ideal self.
