Why Xbox One isn't Slim

The designer in charge of the Xbox One says that the box's size was determined in part to keep it cool.

Microsoft industrial designer Carl Ledbetter told MCV that making a machine like this one involves certain compromises and concessions to functionality, and size is part of that.

“Everybody gets frustrated, because what we want is for everything to be wafer thin, not get hot and just be a snap to put together,” Ledbetter said. “But the reality is that there are very real issues around cooling when you’re pushing some number of watts in the processor, therefore the thing has to have some size to it. There’s always an interesting dynamic between engineering and design, and constraints around performance."

He continued, "It’s called designing with constraints, and constraints create very real things for people to go after and solve. Blue sky can get a little tough because it is limitless and it’s boundless. The engineering doesn’t really become a barrier – engineering is necessary, just like the design and technology. It’s a combination of everything that creates the product.”

Then why isn't the PS4 just as big?
 
I think the Xbox One has a big cooling fan in it, huge vents on the top, vents on the right and left sides, and the back according to pictures I seen online. I think MS don't want to risk getting a lot of over heating problems by making a smaller console with less cooling vents and smaller fans like the original fat white Xbox 360 which RROD after a few months to years.

Plus, a lot of Americans and Westerners like big electronics like Desktop computers, big TVs and monitors, DVRs like the Tivo, bigger size DVD and Blu-Ray players, and home theature surround sound speaker systems since users would want electronics with more features, better performance, and a big case, and a slim case is not as important compared to cool features, faster performance, reliability, and a nice big looking case.
