Are you worried that cheapskates and hackers might be stealing your Wi-Fi signal? Trying to secure wireless networks has been the bane of IT managers for a long time, and those running Wi-Fi LANS with no encryption or even worse, running the ancient WEP system, are wide open to having their bandwidth taken from under their noses. Different solutions such as installing a specific type of window in office buildings to block radio signals or using Wi-Fi signals to cloak your wireless LAN have provided mild success. But Japanese researchers have now developed what they believe to be an even better solution, and all it involves is adding a new paint job to your electronic equipment.

According to a report in New Scientist, paint can be used to protect high-speed wireless networks. RF-blocking paints, the best of which are effective up to about 50GHz, have been on the markets for years now, but the older model paints are quickly becoming obsolete as companies are switching to new, higher frequencies of over 100GHz to send data.

To overcome the issue, a team over at the University of Japan has developed a new powder that can absorb EM waves up to 182Ghz through the use of a recently identified aluminum-iron oxide. The team learned that the new material distorts the bonds between iron and oxygen, which in turn provides the oxides magnetic properties. After further study, the researchers are confident that they will be able to identify even more metal oxides that will allow for the absorption of EM waves at even higher frequencies.

Does it also absorb cell-phone, cordless phone, walkie talkie signal. If it does then this paint won't be too popular.
