The Nintendo Wii has fallen from number one to the number three console. Coming in third usually isn't something to be upset about but the Wii is number three out of three. It has been the top-selling console almost every month since its release in 2006 but its reign as king of the consoles appears to be over.

When the system first came out in 2006 it was impossible to find. I was working at a Best Buy in 2007, and on days we had the Wii in stock, they brought in extra security because of the rabid customers. It was the must-have item months after it debuted. But times have changed.

A recent article in the LA Times revealed the Wii's sales for the first ten months of 2010 were down 24% from 2009. Sales for Microsoft's Xbox 360 are up 34% and Sony's PS3 are up 14%.

Microsoft and Sony can both thank their newly released contributions to motion controls for the sales bump. Casual gamers are why the Wii sold so well before, but with Kinect and Move, Microsoft and Sony are tapping into the same pool of gamers who previously only saw the Wii as an option.

Nintendo is now focusing on late-adopters, people who haven't joined the console party. Nintendo did enjoy high Black Friday sales, selling more than 600,000 Wii consoles.

hard to believe.

Not surprising. It's had it's run, and almost everyone has one... *cough, except DS, cough* And I've noticed sales drops since Sony released PS3 Slim.

I think it was inevitable. The Rev never seemed like it had a huge backing of games to keep gamers playing it. They seem like they had a lot of shovel ware and stuff aimed at the casual crowd. But the problem with this logic is that after the casual crowd buys the console and the 1-2 games they want for it... How long until they buy another game? Or will they even? Some people probably got it for the fitness game and that's it. They don't want the other games, they don't listen to the gaming new so they don't care that the fitness game's sequel came out. Meanwhile, the gamers, the people who are going to listen to the news and buy more games are left without a lot of games and have to watch as the other consoles get great games.

And like GracefulAssassin said, once the PS3 (and I'll extend that to the 360 too) released their $299 model(s), they really took off because they could more effectively compete with the Rev's price. (The PS3 especially...)

The Rev? Do you mean from Avenged Sevenfold?

I think the casual gamers are buying the Kinect and move which brought the Wii sales down. I'm guesing previous Wii owners are buying Xbox 360s and PS3s.

It can also be possible that devices like the iPad are taking some sales away from the consoles since the iPad can also play games.

Ah, sorry, I should have been cleared about this... I hate the name Nintendo gave their 7th gen console. Years ago, before it was released it was being developed under the code name: "Revolution". Which I think is a much cooler name. So I refuse to use the new name for it, and stick with the Revolution or Rev for short.

Oh, yes, I knew that. I just didn't understand when you called it Rev.
