Nintendo reps this afternoon confirmed that the national rollout of Wii Fit will not take place today, May 19, as the company had long promoted. Instead, retailers in North America are being supplied with units in anticipation of a new launch date--Wednesday, May 21.
Consumers who had banked on Wii Fit's availability today could have found the game and peripheral bundle, but at only one location, the Nintendo World store in midtown Manhattan, and in very limited numbers.
After reports of shortages circulated online, a Nintendo spokesperson confirmed what must have become all too obvious to consumers stoked to give the balance board a try.
"Wii Fit is available today exclusively at the Nintendo World store in New York, and will be at retail stores across the country May 21," the rep told GameTap.
The two words "shortages" and "Nintendo" have been nearly synonymous since the launch of the Wii. Ever since the console's November 2006 launch in North America, consumers have been challenged to find adequate supplies of the unique motion-sensing console and controller. Nintendo had long denied there would be shortages of Wii Fit, but based on today's sudden shift in the release schedule, it's hard to believe the company has ironed out supply chain issues that have plagued it in the past.
