Good old Reggie Fils-Aime, he’s the man. The president of Nintendo of America is launching a one man war on the terror that is the lack of internal storage on the Wii. Europe's Laurent Fischer might think that only "geeks and otaku" are bothered about having no space left to store all the lovely WiiWare games and other downloadable content you have bought, but worry not because Reggie is on your side!
Speaking to MTV, Reggie revealed they consider the storage issue to be of wide importance now. It’s not just the hardcore demographic who are getting fed up of this, it has also been identified as an issue for the beloved “causal†market. Let’s face it, how are you going to sell new tracks for Wii Music with nowhere to store them? Here’s what Reggie had to say:
"From an Americas-centric perspective", Fils-Aime diplomatically stated, "here is the reality we see. We have a consumer base who loves virtual console. We have a userbase who really is enjoying WiiWare content. So for us really our challenge really is how do we satisfy all these consumers who are loving all of the product we make available on a download basis?"
Of course, it's not just download content that's putting a strain on the Wii's limited flash storage: "As we continue to have things [...] like Mario Kart that has its own channel when you're playing from an Internet perspective, we're just making this challenge tougher and tougher. So in our view this is becoming much more of a mainstream problem, which is why we have a sense of urgency to solve it."
In other words it sounds like we’ll have our official storage solution sooner rather than later. Who knows if it will be a simple firmware update to allow for direct play from SD cards or something more radical?
