At Tuesday's press conference, Nintendo were frustratingly coy when it came to details of Wii U's online service. But it seems that the new system will scrap the Wii's friend codes in favour of an account-based system, more akin to Xbox Live and PSN.

Speaking to MTV, Ubisoft producer Adrian Blunt confirmed that users will make individual accounts on the Wii U; when asked would it be "Equivalent to a gamertag on Xbox Live," Blunt replied,"Yeah, exactly."

Discussing Ghost Recon Online, Blunt also said that it would be much easier to connect with other users on Wii U, with friend codes being a thing of the past.

This is exactly what I wanted to hear, if I were Microsoft and Sony I would be shaking in my boots right now. Because its going to be Nintendo domination in 2012. Even though it may be priced a little high. There are going to be millions of hard core console fans lined up to buy the Wii U.

Finally! lol.

In the past, I was sick of going online to get friend codes to play online. I had Dial-up Internet connection that point in time, haha.

Well, I'm glad to hear you don't have to use friend codes, but I really hope you don't have to play to get an account like you have to with xbox live.

The friend code system was very un-user friendly. To enter your friends' code into each and every game and being diffenrent for each game was a major hassle. This is very good news that they've seen that people want an account based name, that is easy to find, enter and chat to each other better is actually a great thing.

Honestly, I did not mind adding friend codes.

If there was a feature like Nintendo Live Chat ( built-in the game ) , to communicate with anyone that played the game over Wi-Fi, it'd be much simpler to find people to play over Wi-Fi.

Just my 2 cents.

Friend Codes were the dumbest thing ever. I'm glad to see them leave!

That a very bold prediction :P Even if it happens (and personally I don't believe it will, not with something as the Wii U), it definitely won't be as soon as 2012.

WRT the friend codes, good riddance. Welcome to the 21st century!

Finally! Typing in those friend codes was such a pain, especially with the wiimote. Can't wait to snag a bunch of original usernames! :D
