Earlier this year, after rampant rumors and plenty of leaks, Nintendo revealed its next home console. Titled Wii U, the new hardware was unveiled in full at E3 2011 alongside several software demos and third party announcements. Since then, we've heard nothing about the system - until today.

In his quarterly financial presentation, Nintendo global president Satoru Iwata mentioned Wii U. "We are also planning to launch the Wii U, which is the successor to the Wii, during the next fiscal year. We would like to show the final format of the Wii U at the E3 show next year," Iwata said. Previously we knew the system would not launch before the end of April 2012, and with a better look at the "final" configuration of the hardware coming in June 2012, it seems clear Nintendo is waiting until at least the summer for a launch.

With the Nintendo 3DS struggling to find its footing after release, many will no doubt wonder if the same troubles will befall Wii U. Iwata pledged that would not be the case. "As we learned a bitter lesson with the launch of the Nintendo 3DS, we are trying to take every possible measure so that the Wii U will have a successful launch," Iwata said.
