It was somewhat mentioned before but most gaming sites kinda look over it or just didn't pay much attention to it. But now it is officially confirmed by Iwata. The Wii U is not just HD but also 3D ready.

If you are going to connect Wii U with a home TV capable of displaying 3-D images, technologically, yes, it is going to be possible, but that's not the area we are focusing on... When it comes to 3-D, we already have the 3DS, and each owner of the Nintendo 3DS is capable of viewing 3-D images. However, when it comes to the home console, it depends upon the availability of 3-D TV sets at home, which, unfortunately, is not expanding enough. And rather than pouring a lot of energy into that kind of area, with the Wii U we'd like to focus more on each Wii U owner being able to have an equal opportunity to enjoy it.

In a few years virtually all new tvs will probably have some form of 3d functionality. That's always the way. The latest thing eventually becomes the standard.

It would've been dumb to leave out 3d. PS3 is 3d ready, and the WiiU will want to at least match current-gen.

Well HD TVs actually came out in the 80s, and they didn't catch on until 2005 or so... Usually new technology starts to become widely used after it it both price efficient and supported by multiple things. Having a 3D TV when it just came out would probably give you 1 movie, and 1 channel to watch.
