Except for one in which Xbox 360 sales boomed thanks to Halo 3, Nintendo's Wii console has remained the best-selling console since its release in November of 2006, according to new videogame software and hardware sales data released by the NPD Group. Furthermore, Wii and DS have held the number-one and two best-selling hardware spots for four months running.
That's right – NPD numbers for May are in and, as expected, Wii and DS performed exceptionally well.
Wii sold through roughly 675,000 consoles during the month. DS another 452,000. PlayStation 3 208,000. Xbox 360 186,000. PSP 182,000. And PlayStation 2 132,000.
Surprisingly, massive sales of Grand Theft Auto 4 – it was the top-selling game of the month – have had little impact on Xbox 360 or PS3 hardware sales. Meanwhile, Mario Kart and Wii Fit have sustained massive Wii sales, but not boosted them, according to final software numbers, which we've provided below:
* 1. GTA (360): 853,000
* 2. Mario Kart Wii: 790,000
* 3. Wii Fit: 690,000
* 4. GTA 4 (PS3): 430,000
* 5. Wii Play: 300,000
* 6. Super Smash Bros. Brawl: 172,000
* 7. Iron Man (PS2):130,000
* 8. Guitar Hero 3 (Wii): 116,000
* 9. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon Explorers of Darkness DS: 109,000
* 10. Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time (102,000)
Nintendo stated months ago that it would ready more than a million units of Wii Fit for the game's American launch. However, the title has remained sold out across the country since its release on May 19, which paints a picture that, in fact, the company did not meet its own allocation expectations.
Namco rode the Wii Balance Board bandwagon with the release of Wii Ski, which, despite lukewarm reviews, was the eleventh best-selling game of the month.
Finally, Guitar Hero III continues to outpace Rock Band in sales. Activision's music title has amassed 2.5 million in sales this year compared to EA's 1.3 million. As readers can see, the Wii version of Guitar Hero III continues to hold a spot on the top 10 best-sellers list.
