WiiWare threshold Nintendo has put in place that must be met before a developer is paid. Essentially, unless a game is downloaded a certain number of times (somewhere in the quadruple digits in the U.S.) the developer does not receive a check from Nintendo. It appears that the threshold is in place to deter a bunch of shovelware being thrown onto WiiWare.

An anonymous developer, speaking to Eurogamer, further confirms this news but defends the threshold. Like WiiWare developers IGN has spoken with, the anonymous source appreciates the effort to discourage cheap and dirty games. The source also clears up an area of confusion about the threshold: developers are apparently paid for all their previous downloads once a game has crossed over the brink.

"Once the threshold is crossed, the developer is retroactively paid for every single unit sold below the threshold," says Eurogamer's Deepthroat. "I know there has been confusion on that point in the past.

"From the stats I've seen and heard developers report, the threshold is easily surpassed within the first day, or at least the first week, for many games."
