Will Amiibo succeed?

Well, will it?

Cause honestly, I'm not 100% sure in it myself. I mean, it's a good money maker if it does kick off, but those figurines seem like they'll be a tad expensive to buy tons of, and they'll take a huge amount of room on shop shelves...

But what do you think? Has Amiibo got a chance?

Hmm I'm going to say there is a chance of them being successful, but it may also depend on what other games will make use of them too. I thought they were at a reasonable price.

It would be interesting to hear a review of a NFC to see how different the characters play compared to Lv.9 CPUs because sure you could try to make them have improved difficulty, however you can't truly get any harder difficulty-wise unless you are either forced to lose or they really aren't that great. Being the popular game series Smash Bros. is I wouldn't be surprised if things go either way successful or not. Sure hardcore fans would get at least one and there might be obsessive Nintendo collectors that might want them, but to the everyday audience you'd probably get the game and wait till it's a kid's birthday until they get an NFC. If that is their only interest. There certainly is a chance and I think Nintendo is going to learn something from the sales.

Dunno, but I think it's got a good chance. Especially if they find a way to tie the same figures into multiple games. Increase their value more for the consumer and it will go to guaranteeing it's success. With how many blasted figures there are between Skylanders and Disney Infinity(These things seem to take up whole aisle's at stores nowadays, if not two), I think it would be in their best interest to not go absolutely berserk with figures though... At least release them nice and slow.

After watching the trailer and seeing how you can level them almost like old Capcom fighters such as Pocket Fighter or Street Fighter Alpha 3... I MAY actually get SSB3DS if the Amiiba 3DS comes out so I can level a Mega Man, Link, and/or Samus.

There's going to be an Amiibo for the 3DS? How is that supposed to work? Unless you scan the figure with the camera or something. Now that I think about it, I don't even know how it works with Skylanders or Disney on the Wii U.

Scratch that I just looked it up. I still may not get any though. Unless it makes a character really OP and makes it really unfair to the point where you need to have it. Though that would be... unfair. Even by a marketing stand.

I think they will at least be midly popular during the launch of Super Smash. There is also quite a marked for nintendo collectible figures already, and the amiibos seem to be reasonable quality and a low price.  Although the continued success lies in their ability to implement support for the figures in more games. They have already said they will support them i Mario Kart 8, but I wonder how figures like Samus and other characters not in the game will work. Mario and other popular figures might get all the fun, due to being in the most games, while more niche ones like Marth may end up with lower usage. If Nintendo can nail down use of the figures in at least a few major games a year, they should continue to sell well. A skylander'ish game with nintendo figures, or a pokemon type of game would not hurt either I think.

If you watched the videos they explain that each figure only works for one game. Much like Skylanders, the figures are just over-priced overglorified USB Flash drives that associate with their respective game. That being said, expect the Mario Kart 8 ones to be figures in their karts, for example.

Pokemon would be Rumble series i'd wager.

Didn't they say that the figures would be compadible more games than one though? I seem to remember a graph showing a part of the save space on the amiibo figure being used by smash bros, and then other parts being marked as "new game" or something. They also said something about some characters getting more than one figure, so characters in carts are certainly a possibility.

No, they never said more than one game per figure. and the New Game you saw was probably for multiple builds of the same character. If you listen to what he says, he states "And more games will be released that use Amiiba, which means more figures to collect" implying each game uses its own figures but they do not share them. The only way I see them using the same figures is if they make the next SSB or Mario Kart 9 use the figures from the current installments.

I wouldn't necessarily say their overpriced and overglorified. Just like the Skylanders, the games that use these figures are 'games that come with toys'. They're collectible items that double as accessories to your games. Just because you don't like them doesn't mean they're bad. Some people really dig the collectible nature of them and really appreciate having more merchandise being made available- being able to actually USE the figures in some way makes them even better.?

I could potentially see cross game figures being made available. Say the Fox McCloud they're releasing to work with Smash Bros might also work with the new Starfox game, but they'd release a new Fox McCloud figure made specifically for that game as well. There's at least 2 different Spyro figures for Skylanders, but you can use any of them with the games. We'll just have to see whether they go with the game exclusive route or not- depending on how they make them, I believe it'd be possible to update the figures data to make it possible.

Where did i say that i dislike them? lol I even stated elsewhere i'll only get SSB 3DS when the amiiba 3DS comes out for it :p But if you look at the average price of a flash drive and factor capacity to cost then it is essentially a cosmetically enhanced flash drive, thus overglorified and overpriced. As a collectible figure alone, however, i can appreciate the worth and value.

Speaking of skylanders... the new game was advertised on 360. Not only does the monster with a gun that shoots tomatos refer to them wrongly as 'vegetables' rather than fruits., but the advertisement said Wii U, 3DS at the bottom but nowhere did it say 360 - the console the ad was on lol

Ah, I mistook the aggressiveness of the terms overpriced and overglorified as expressing your distaste. Apologies! Some people on here really, really hate the NFC chip figures. All the figures for any of the games are great little collectibles. I wish my Skylanders were a little better painted sometimes, and I'm hoping the paint jobs on the Nintendo figures is nice. I want that new Skylanders game, but the dark starter pack for PS4 is $100. x.X;;;

I'm one of those people that doesn't like the idea, however I do think it will be a moderate success. The only thing Nintendo might mess up on is marketing it which is very likely given it's recent marketing campaigns, but if Nintendo is able to get past marketing, yeah I think it will be a success. I personally will be buying at least one of them just to check it out and if I like it I'll probably buy more.

:yeahthat: lol Nintendo and marketing .... ugh. They used to be sO good at it and as of the past few years they've sucked at it as much as they do 'online' gaming and naming products (See everything labeled with 'New' before it such as New 3DS).

With the release date of smash bros for Wii U and the amiibo figures, Nintendo also clarified a bit on the use of amiibo figures across games. They stated that "some figures offer compatibility across multiple games". I guess that means the figures based on characters most commonly used in games, like Mario, will get the most use. I'm still gonna get a few of the niche ones though, as they seem like good quality figurines at a relatively low price.
