I think there may not be as many buyers for new mainstream luxury car made by brands like BMW or Cadilac which sell millions of cars worldwide. Many mainstream luxury car owners are usually 60 years old or older according to articles and forum posts I read. Most of the people I see on the street driving popular luxury car brands are usually over 50. Eventually, these older drivers will not have driver licenses because of poor eye sight, or their body's arm and leg muscles are too weak to drive a car. Plus, they may not have the money to afford a luxury car when they are retired.

Most super rich people like Bill Gates, and Gas Company owners will most likely stick to buying custom cars like the batmobile from batman, or more rare exclusive luxury cars made by Ferrari, Lamborghini, Bugatti, Rolls Royce, etc, and don't want to drive a cheaper luxury car brand made by a mainstream luxury car brands like BMW, Lincoln or Volvo.

A lot of broke young people may not be able to ever to afford to buy a popular luxury car, made by BMW, Mercedes, Lexus, etc because people are not making enough money to afford luxury cars. Plus, it is more important to use money to payback student loans, credit card debt, home loans, etc. Investing in gold and land is better than buying an expensive car which may only be worth a few thousand dollars in a few years once you sell it to a used car dealership.

There are many people including old people who now rather buy cheaper cars made by Chevy, Ford, Mitsubishi, Kia, Hyundai, and Nissan because they no longer can afford to buy and maintain a luxury cars which cost a lot more to buy and maintain unless you are rich.

More affordable cars like Toyota Prius are now better where they come with air conditioning, decent stereo systems, heated seats, power windows, etc . Cheaper cars may not have all the features of a luxury car, but they have enough features for most people.

I think some people may not buy expensive cars because it is no longer as cool to be driving an expensive car in poor and middle class communities because poor people think you wasted your money on an expensive car rather than using your money for going to college, or putting in a savings account.

People's health are becoming better for longer amount of time where they don't need a car to get around for most of the year, and rather peddle a bicycle to work, walk, run, or take public transportation like a bus, tram, or subway where they can save many thousands of dollars per year. By the time older people need a car, they may pick a cheaper car brand because they don't plan to keep or heavily drive the car after they retire, so a cheaper car like Toyota Corolla.

There will always be buyers, just a matter of how many and enough to keep making new ones.

Sometimes car companies also get sold if another company offer them a lot of money. I think Volvo is now owned by a Chinese company, and China is using Volvo's tech to make Chinese cars.
