If the motor oil, and other gas engine lubricants and cleaners being sold at the dollar store have a lot of good user reviews from buyers who tried the product, and the motor oil and car lubricants and cleaner is compatible with my car, I would use car engine oil, and lubricants which is sold at the dollar store.

I try cheap motor oil, gas engine treatment, gas and fuel injector cleaner liquid and other car repair and maintenance liquids on a low performance economy car which does not need more high performance motor oil designed for expensive sports and luxury cars with more advance and powerful engines.

Changing the motor oil with a less expensive brand of motor oil from the dollar store is better than running a car with very dirty and old oil, or not having enough motor oil to properly lubricate your car.

But, I think gas treatments are not always worth it because gas from most gas station already contain some cleaning treatments to clean the fuel injectors on a car. They maybe worth it if you suspect your fuel injectors are very clogged from bad gas.

I agree professional car oil change stores would be the safest way to do a full oil change if you don't know what you are doing.

It is a good idea to bring the bottle of motor oil from the dollar store to a car mechanic to see if he say it will damage a car engine, or contact the maker of the oil to see if the oil is compatible with your car.

Don't try to solve a problem cheaply as more 'expensive' problems might show up later.

Some dollar stores like Dollar General does sell a few more famous and expensive brands of motor oil brands like Pennzoil and Castrol which are more popular, and are compatible with most regular gas cars.

Cheap car fluids like motor oil may cause problems in the future, but some cheap motor oil can be as good as other quality brand names where you are mainly paying for the brand name, and reputation of the oil being good for most car engines. Some more affordable motor oil maybe made by a oil company which also make more expensive oil, but they rebrand it, or sell less oil per bottle to keep the price to $1 for their less famous brand.

Car problems from using cheaper price motor oil may not show up if the oil is well-made to protect a cars engine, and the owner of the car change their oil when required. The owner may sell their car before the problems from using cheaper oil show up, and there is always a rare chance the car suddenly gets stolen, lost or destroyed in a forest fire, big car crash, earthquake, etc where using cheap oil would not extend the amount of time you own the car without motor oil problems.

I would like to spend a little more on things like this so it doesn't end up like Gervin mentioned.

I feel if motor oil, and gas fuel injector cleaners sold at a dollar store has good reviews from many buyers, it can be fine for most cars and is acceptable for protecting a car's gas engine for many thousands of miles before the user need to do another oil change again after they driven a few thousands of miles or once or twice a year depending on what their car's oil change recommended schedule like changing the oil every 3000 miles or once a year.

Spending a lot of money on very expensive motor oil like Royal Purple oil which cost $100 for a pack of 12 1 Quart bottles may not be worth it if cheaper motor oil, or slightly more expensive motor oil work at protecting a motor for many years of regular driving where the engine outlast most of the other expensive to repair car parts like automatic transmission. The money spent on more expensive motor oil can be better use for buying another car when a very older car need a lot of expensive repairs like rust repairs, paint, steering system, air conditioning, power windows, braking system which may cost more to repair than the cost of some used cars and new economy cars depending on the brand and model of car.
