Hey, remember when Microsoft was offering a free and complete version of Windows 7 before it was even released, otherwise known as the Windows 7 Release Candidate? Well, those who opted to download the free pre-release version of the new OS should now be experiencing a series of automatic shutdowns as the free 1-year trial comes to an end. That's right, the honeymoon is over. You and Windows 7 Release Candidate should be well on your way to couples therapy, leading to an inevitable divorce.

As part of the terms of downloading and using the Windows 7 Release Candidate, machines using the pre-release OS will begin bi-hourly automatic shutdowns starting March 1, 2010. These automatic shut offs will result in unsaved data loss and a forced closure of all current programs.

Those using the Windows 7 Release Candidate are strongly urged to revert to a previous OS or upgrade to the full retail version of Windows 7. Instructions on how to do so are available at Microsoft's Windows Blog.

At least, it is better then being locked out of your OS for not buying a valid copy or upgrading.

I wonder if there is a countdown counter to tell the user when to save his work before the autamatic shutdown happens. In a way, if you only use your PC for 1 hour or less per day or just use it to watch Youtube videos. It won't be as annoying.

I'm sure there is something that tells them they have X amount of use time for their OS.

I'm thankful I have a desktop PC that runs Windows 7 instead of Vista, the startup and shutdown times have improved.
