ZDNet hears from sources that Microsoft wants to release the upgrade, tentatively named Update 1, on March 11th. The patch may let you do more than pin Windows Store apps, too: Redmond's developers will reportedly be able to optimize Windows' memory and storage footprints for lower-end tablets.

Speeding up Windows 8 on slower devices with an update is one way of increasing the number of users who use 8 because a lot of people own slower computers which are too slow to run Windows Vista, and 7 without slowdown problems, but may not want to use Windows XP because it is too old, or Linux which can be too hard to use, and is not compatible with software like Photoshop, MS Word, and Windows games.

This is great news for people who own slower Windows 8 tablets with 1-2GB of RAM, and the Surface RT tablet with only 2GB of RAM. It would also make tablets like the Dell Venue 8 Pro which only has 2GB of RAM more worth the $299 USD price tag because of the slower RAM usage of Windows 8, so users can run more RAM intensive tasks like video and photo editing on a tablet.

Maybe soon there will be Windows 8 tablets with 1 to 1.5 GB of RAM selling for $99-125 like the many $99 Google Android tablets with 1 GB of RAM which perform pretty good for most tasks, and older mobile games like Angry Bird.
